It was recorded on a rest stop between France and Belgium, somewhere in France along the toll roads. Karl had spent so much time on the toll roads that he was beginning to feel like he was stuck in a liminal space—the endless in-between where the purpose is to arrive and not to stop and ponder.

Belgium turns out to be a multifaceted place, and it blows Karl's mind. Modernist meets ultra-west. There are canals that travel across bridges, massive enough to carry serious boats. Belgium has a flair and flavor that weaves together several feelings and cultures — reminiscent of places that shouldn't go together, but somehow do.

E08 – I Could Never Live in France
