The Modern World Sucks

This is all true. When I grew up I remember running in forests, going to my friends’ house for dinner, people congregating on a field to watch a comet fly-by and general happiness and social interaction. Then came the cell phone. We laughed at it and thought it was pointless. Why would you need a cell phone when we could call each other using a pay phone? And if we were planning to meet we just set a time and place and waited (and sometimes for a long time) until the person showed up. Or we got tired of waiting and left.

Today I hear stories of infants and young children getting depressed because their parents are sunken into their cell phones and don’t give them enough attention. In Sweden where all of this is taking place, social interaction is at an all time low and you can walk through the city at rush hour without making eye contact with anyone.

And then there is the money… Everyone seems to think of nothing but what to buy next and how to give their money away to corporations. It’s like we built this man-made shitty world where the rules of nature no longer rule. Instead, we are ruled by the IRS, social expectations and a constant need for attention, consumption and fame. Selfie just became a word in the Oxford dictionary for example.

I saw a documentary about tribal people in the Amazon and watched in awe as they focused on happiness, love and relationships. They didn’t need money or cell phones to survive and had no artificial first world problems. They didn’t have property rights because they didn’t need them. If someone wanted to build a house they could go ahead. No greedy people in sight to fence off excessive land (and no word for “fence” in their language) and if they did exist they would be battered to death. Be nice or be dead was their slogan. And it worked.

Contrast this with our world where corporations can become legal entities and own land. And if you want to build a house somewhere you can’t.
